But people usually say police do not work at all, they are corrupt, no need of goons policy is enough. Every day we encounter the brutality of the police in different forms through media. Now fear has resided in the heart of the common people about police.

Police departments must protect us but people think that police are not fulfilling their duty responsibly. Police are themselves a problem instead of a help in problem-solving.

The police department is always alleged that it works only for the ruler, not people. But in a democratic form of Government, their accountability must be towards people instead of rulers.

How rulers control the police department?

- Posting, transfers, and promotions are in the hands of rulers.

- Who will be arrested and against whom FIR will be registered decided by rulers.

- If someone doesn't work according to them and disrespects their orders he or she will be transferred or suspended in some wrong cases and even sometimes mentally tortured.

What's wrong with the police department

1. There are 92% constables in Indian police, working 24 hours in vulnerable working conditions.

2. They are facing excess political pressure and control.

3. Over 930 police personals have committed suicide in the last 5 years.

4. Brutality of some policemen spoils the image of the whole department.

5. Slow procedure system and corruption are also the factors affecting the image of the department.

6. To some extent police have lost the trust of people that is why people do not go to register complaints.

7. Common people are afraid of police instead of goons.

JanMaitri, Kerela police department (case study)

1. As the name suggests, this police force work with full cooperation with the common people. It was started in 2008 by the Kerala government.

2. The decision of starting this kind of police force in Kerala was taken, to change the behavior of police towards common people.

3. And this initiative has completely changed the image of the police department.

4. Here constables take rounds in their respective areas regularly. And ask common people if they have any kind of problem. This police force tries to build up friendly relations with common people.

5. They also provide fundamental police training to children of their area.

6. This police department fully co-operate with many institutions as government hospital and they give their best in helping them in every situation.

7. The crime rate of Kerala is tremendously reduced after the working of the JanMaitri police force.

Steps should be taken

1. Working time should be limited to 8 hours.

2. Promotion should be given on a performance basis which will work as a motivation for them.

3. To improve the image of police torture and beating brutally should be stopped. For this cameras should be installed in the police stations.

4. Women constables should be present in every police station. So women feel empowered and secured.

5. They should be a 30% reservation of women in the police department.

6. Community policing means the cooperation of common people with the police. People should trust the police and their work.

7. Excess political interference of politicians in the working of police should be stopped.

The distance between police and common people can only be reduced by the feeling of trust and brotherhood.
