Indian secularism VS western secularism

Introduction:

When a child takes birth he gets the name, caste as well as religion from his parents. He grows up with the custom and rituals of his religion. He speaks a language that is preferred by his religion. He is regularly asked to worship his religion. Today, in this blog we will discuss the meaning of secularism, India's policy of religion and also compare it with the western policy.
so let's begin.

Meaning of secularism:

The term secularism was first used by British writer George Holyoake in 1851. Described it as promoting a social order separate from religion without dismissing or criticizing religious belief. The belief that religion should not be involved with the ordinary social and political activities of a country. In political term secularism is a movement toward the separation of religion and government. Modern democracies are generally recognised as secular due to near complete freedom of religion.
India became secular:

India got independence in 1947 adopted its constitution 26 November 1949 and enforced it on 26 January 1950. However the supreme court of India establish the fact that India was secular since the formation of republic. But with the enactment of 42nd amendment act 1976 India was declared secular nation by adding 'secular' in the preamble of Indian constitution.

Indian secularism:
- state is neutral to all religious groups but not necessarily separate.
- there is a positive relationship between state and religion.
- all expression of religion is manifested equally with support from the state
- state provide financial AIDS to religious institutions
- although law is same for all, some personal laws such as marriage, property are different for many communities.

Western secularism:
- state is completely separate from the functioning of all religious institutions and groups
- state can curtail rights of citizen if the religion is causing hindrance in the functioning of state
- does not believe in open display of religion except for places for worship
- does not add any religious institution through financial means or taxes.
- dispense of justice regardless religious background.
Conclusion:

Religion is a matter of faith and belief. Everyone must have the right to follow any religion of their choice. Politics based on religion division should not be done. There must be a positive relationship between state and religion. Minority religious community should be protected by state by providing some financial aid.

Any Indian citizen who is 18yrs old and above has the right to vote and contest the election.13 Dec 1989 was the date when the starting age was reduced to18yrs from 21yrs.
