What does an IAS officer do?

When you hear the word IAS, the things that must come to your mind are UPSC, civil services exam, aspirants, dedication, courage, hard work, power, responsibilities, etc. 

You know, UPSC is considered one of the toughest exams in India. And only, around 90 Top candidates get Indian Administrative Services every year, which is very little.

So, in today's blog, we will discuss the day-to-day working and responsibility of an IAS officer.

Indian Administration Services fall into the executives part of the central government. It means they work to implement the laws, formulated by the legislature, on the ground level.

There are three different levels in these services, where you get promotion according to your experience. 

Entry-level: They are responsible for maintaining laws and order in their particular areas and for collecting the revenue for the government. 

Middle level: They are in charge of a combination among different government departments.

Supreme level: in charge of advance duties such as policy framing etc. 

-At the entry-level, they get appointed as SDM.
-At the middle level, they get appointed as collectors or District Magistrates.
-At the supreme level, civil servants get appointed as additional secretary, Secretary, Joint Secretary, cabinet secretary, Indian representatives in international organizations.


Responsibilities of SDM 
1. Maintain land records.
2. Public land protection.
3. Supervise the election.
4. Issuing SC, ST, and OBC certificates.
5. Conduct inquiry in major accidents, fires, riots, etc.
6. Supervisor of the illegal detention. 
7. Take action towards encroachers of govt. property.

Responsibilities of Collector/DM
1. Supervisor of the law and order in the whole district.
2. Disaster crisis management.
3. Revenue collection, implementation of government schemes throughout the district.

Cabinet secretary is the highest position, any IAS officer can achieve. 

Responsibilities of Cabinet Secretary
1. Coordinate among PM and other ministers.
2. In charge coordinator of ministers and civil servants.
3. Management of major crises. 

Higher the post, higher the responsibilities.

India got 31 cabinet secretaries since independence. But not a single woman is appointed till now.
