"Spirituality as a science, as a study, is the greatest and healthiest exercise that the human mind can have."
-Swami Vivekananda
Swami Vivekananda has been a constant source of inspiration for the Indian Youth for the last 130 years. The vociferous but kind-hearted monk who represented the ancient Indian culture in the 'World Parliament of Religions' and popularised the core of our Civilisation by enunciating his famous call 'Sisters and Brothers of America', he not only presented the intrinsic and fundamental values of India to the world but also strived to unfetter the holy land of Bharat from the shackles of irrational superstitions and orthodox prejudices. We all either remember him as a generous monk who established Ramakrishna Mission to help the needy and the poor or as a social reformer who endeavoured to eradicate the social evils that were prevailing in our country during that period along with his contemporaries. But, we tend to miss the other side of the coin.
Swami Vivekananda had a scientific attitude right from the beginning which got converted into an incredible power of modification and rejuvenation of the Scientific approach when mingled with spirituality.
Science in Vedantic Doctrines
Swami Vivekananda's meeting with renowned scientist Nicola Tesla is well known where the two great geniuses of their time discussed the concepts of prâna, âkâsha, and kalpas, three elementary concepts of the Vedantic doctrine. The latter started studying the ancient Indian texts and stated that he could scientifically and mathematically comprehend many of those phenomena. This provides us with a vivid sight of Swami Vivekananda's vision of Scientific Rejuvenation, not only of Bharat but also of the whole world. As he himself quoted," Science and religion will meet one day and shake hands."
Make in India
Swami Vivekananda was the real pioneer of the 'Make in India' mindset. The letters he exchanged with Jamshetji Tata do reveal a flawless dialogue on the scientific legacy of Indian asceticism and the naturalist and humanist scientific principles that backed our Spiritual methods and theories. Swami Ji wanted to behold India not only as the spiritual but also as the scientific leader of the world. It was his vision of the Scientific Rejuvenation of Bharat that led to the establishment of the Tata Institute of Sciences in 1909 (later renamed The Indian Institute of Sciences in 1911).
Swami Vivekananda wanted to see India with massive scientific production. This is evident from the fact that he advised Jamshetji Tata to find an institution that will create skilled Indian youth to utilise the new scientific innovations instead of going abroad to buy the new technology dominating the world. It is his farsight that is still benefitting the Indian Youth to gain and execute scientific knowledge, further making this world a better place to live in.
Eradication of Unscientific Social Beliefs
Swami Vivekananda appears highly exasperated in his speeches and writings when it comes to unscientific practices and beliefs in Indian customs. He fervently believed that these superstitions were victimizing the core Culture of Bharat and fatally harming the soul of India. He took a firm step against evils like the caste system, religious hatred and orthodox worshipping practices. There are many instances in his life that resemble the same. There are several examples when he ate the simple food offered to him by a low-caste man or a Muslim man.
He wanted Bharat to be unrestricted from the chains that hold her back from progressing and advancing both in spiritual and scientific fields. He wanted the Indian youth to discover a pious path for their spiritual liberation and not get accustomed to antiquated restrictions put on them by the society.
Conclusion
The present Bharat finds itself overwhelmed with the expectations and prejudices of modern India, looking for individuals who can take her out of this death trap. This National Youth Day, let us all pledge to follow in the footsteps of Swami Vivekananda to make India an impeccable Bharat that it used to be once and lead the world both spiritually and scientifically.
